Skin Testing: What You Need to Know
We want you to feel confident that your hair is in safe hands. That’s why allergy testing is an important part of our colour service. Here’s everything you need to know before your appointment.
Why do I need a skin test?
Hair colour contains ingredients that can occasionally cause an allergic reaction, even if you’ve coloured your hair many times before without any problems.
A skin test helps us check for possible sensitivity before applying colour to your hair.
It’s a simple precaution, but an important one.
When will I need a skin test?
You’ll need a skin test if:
You’re having colour with us for the first time.
It’s been more than six months since your last colour appointment with us.
Your consultation identifies another reason why a test is needed.
Your skin’s sensitivity can change over time, which is why we may need to repeat the test even if you’ve had one before.
How does it work?
Simply pop into the salon at least 48 hours before your colour appointment.
We’ll apply a small amount of colour to your skin, following the recommended testing procedure.
The colour is left on for 45 minutes before being rinsed off. We’ll explain what to look out for over the following 48 hours and what to do if you notice a reaction.
Please allow 45 minutes for your skin test visit.
There’s no need to book an appointment for your skin test, although if you’re new to us, we’d recommend arranging a colour consultation at the same time.
What happens if I have a reaction?
If you notice any itching, redness, swelling or irritation during or after your test, please let us know.
We won’t go ahead with your colour service if there’s a suspected allergic reaction. Your safety comes first, and we’ll talk you through the next steps.
What if I can’t get in for a skin test?
If you’re unable to visit us at least 48 hours beforehand, please give us a call.
We may need to rearrange your colour appointment to allow enough time for testing.
We appreciate that making an extra trip to the salon isn’t always convenient, but it’s an important part of looking after you.
If you have any questions, just get in touch. We’re always happy to help.
